Advance our understanding of the impact of market system dynamics on the sustainable use of biomass

icon3oObjective

Within this activity the BIOTEAM consortium partners will assess the impact of day-to-day competitive (or distorted) market forces on the behaviour and actions of bio-energy pathway stakeholders. Understanding this relationship between the dynamics of the market systems and market stakeholder behaviour allows us to better understand the influence of market forces on the sustainability performance of bio-energy pathways. The BIOTEAM consortium will use an existing tool called market mapping to perform the market system assessments.

In order to be able to perform this impact assessment the BIOTEAM consortium will involve a series of public and private stakeholders that have first-hand experience/knowledge with market system dynamics

Key tasks

  • Perform a series of market system analyses so as to better understand the fundamental drivers of the behaviour of individual biomass stakeholders in a (competitive) market environment. These market system maps will provide both public and private stakeholders with an overview of the key market factors that play a decisive role in determining today’s sustainability performance of the biomass market system in which the selected bio-energy pathways operate
  • Set up a number of structured consultation meetings with stakeholders to be able to validate and fine-tune the main findings of the preliminary market system analyses in which the selected bio-energy pathway operate

Key outputs

  • A preliminary market system mapping report (before stakeholder consultation); 2-3 per country
  • An advanced market system mapping report (after stakeholder consultation); 2-3 per country
  • A synthesis market system assessment report for all countries combined
